President Cristina Fernandez said today, during a Government House press conference, that the primary, open and simultaneous primary elections held yesterday were “a very important qualitative leap forward” for the democratic consolidation of Argentina.
But the President refused to comment on the political meaning of her sweeping victory, and said that such task “was up to journalists and media commentators”.
She remarked, anyhow, that the favorable results are probably the consequence of the hard work displayed by her Administration.
Asked on the fact that yesterday she won in districts where her Front for Victory (FPV) had previously been defeated, Cristina answered that “nobody owns the citizens’ votes. The people value highly the political leaders’ ability to provide answers to their problems”.
Cristina was asked whether she planned to invite the opposition political leaders to a dialogue she had referred to last night, during a victory celebration. Cristina answered that the proper realm for such political coincidence is Congress, “where all the political parties are represented”.
The President made use of the press conference to invite all the political forces to speed up in Congress a project she sent earlier this year, to impose limits to the purchase of land by foreign capitals. “It is a key subject in the coming times”, she said.
Cristina, when asked whether her Government would continue using Central Bank reserves next year to meet the country’s foreign obligations, replied that in the present times, it is impossible to anticipate such decisions. It is impossible to forecast what is going to happen with the world economy in a year’s time.
“Once we have the necessary information, after we hold important regional meetings and consultations, we shall take the necessary measures”.
