President Cristina Fernández told her Uruguayan colleague José Mujica that “we must deepen regional association, without closing ourselves to the rest of the world”.
Mujica headed a delegation of Uruguayan officials that arrived in Buenos Aires for bilateral talks. During a luncheon offered to her visitors, Cristina remarked that the region faces “the great challenge of deepening its association, which does not mean closing itself to the rest of the world.
She then added “being partners entails winning for both sides, and that is what the mechanism of integration is for”, she expressed. The President said that “we must keep working to deepen our integration and association with Uruguay”.
Mujica replied that the permanent dialogue was useful for overcoming discrepancies between both nations and the most important result is that we have been able to restore our traditional friendship with Argentina. "It is high time for us to realize that our future is at stake together with our neighbors”.
“Today, I convey again my greeting and thanks to President Cristina for her friendship, and through her to all the Argentine people. I always keep reminding that many of my countrymen live in Argentina and do not regard themselves as foreigners”, added the Uruguayan President.
“They have set as a goal the good neighbors policy. During too many decades we kept ignoring one another, always looking towards Europe. For that reason it is high time to realize that we either pull out with our neighbors or we fail to do it at all”, Mujica remarked.
