President Cristina Fernández said last night that Eva Perón “should be a symbol of unity as well as a cultural icon for all the Argentine people”, during the inauguration of a giant picture of Evita, made within an iron structure, which covers the Southern side of the Social Welfare Ministry in downtown Buenos Aires.
The President, from a podium on 9 de Julio Avenue, told thousands of cheering people that Eva Perón “gives us the lesson from history that it is necessary the national unity to obtain our great goals”.
The inauguration was held in the 59th anniversary of Eva Perón’s death. The picture was made by sculptor Alejandro Marmo and by painter Daniel Santoro.
Cristina said that she got the idea of the giant picture while visiting Havana in 2009, when she saw a great image of Ernesto Che Guevara in the Interior Ministry’s building.
Then she queried herself how was it possible that Cuba was honoring in such way a man who had not born in that country “while we failed to do it with a woman that not only enabled the incorporation of women to politics but also assumed without hesitation the representation of her people and of her fatherland with more passion and love than anybody else”.
The President chose a picture of Evita that became famous because it was on the cover of her book, “La Razón de Mi Vida” (The Reason of my life). “And I decided that Evita´s image should be looking South, because that is where the thousands of workers who staged the Oct. 17 episode came from”, she added.
